Use a 5-gallon bucket as your triathlon transition kit
Carry all your race gear in a 5-gallon bucket, then flip it over in transition so it becomes the seat you sit on to pull on socks and shoes.
Transition at a triathlon is a small patch of ground, usually crowded, usually wet, and you are trying to find your gear while soaked and out of breath. Most people bring a duffel or a backpack โ which slumps open, spills into the neighboring athlete's space, and gives you nothing to sit on. Getting socks onto wet feet while balancing on one leg is where a surprising amount of time and dignity goes.
A 5-gallon bucket solves the carry, the organization, and the seat all at once.
What you need
- One 5-gallon bucket
- Optional: a lid, so the bucket stays closed in the car and dry in the rain
- Your normal race gear
Do this
- Pack everything for the race into the bucket โ helmet on top, bike shoes, running shoes, socks, nutrition, towel, sunscreen. It carries by the handle with one hand, which leaves your other hand for the bike.
- Set the bucket down in your transition spot and unload. The bucket's footprint is small, so your gear stays inside your own rectangle instead of creeping into your neighbor's.
- Once it's empty, flip it upside down. That's your seat.
- Come out of the swim, sit on the bucket, and put on socks and bike shoes sitting down instead of hopping on one foot.
- Same again coming off the bike โ sit, swap to running shoes, go.
- After the race, everything goes back in the bucket and out with you in one trip.
What changes
One thing to carry in, one thing to carry out, a contained footprint in a crowded transition area, and a dry place to sit at exactly the two moments in the race when sitting down saves you time. It also doubles as a seat while you wait around before the start.
